Bristol Nights has announced the launch of a new initiative Thrive at Night. Aimed at providing mental health and wellbeing support, the program will offer training to the city’s 6pm to 6am workforce when it launches on Tuesday 13th June 2023.

Thrive At Night - Mental health and wellbeing for the night time economy

Bristol's Night Time Economy Advisor and the Council's Public Health team have joined forces to create Thrive at Night. The initiative is a collaboration with night time economy businesses and workers, plus experts in mental health and wellbeing, to ensure that the Thrive at Night resources and training meet the needs of night time workers.

The night time economy is a vital component of Bristol's cultural and economic landscape. Following a difficult few years, the COVID-19 pandemic has inevitably taken a toll on the mental health and wellbeing of some of those who work in the industry. Recognising the need for additional support, Bristol Nights’ newly launched comprehensive program offers a range of mental health resources to those who work during the evening and night in Bristol.

Thrive at Night will provide free mental health training sessions for local hospitality businesses, including bars, nightclubs, and restaurants. Covering a range of topics, including stress management, how to create a mentally healthy workplace and to be a compassionate leader, reacting to a serious incident and how to support employees who may be self medicating as a reaction to stress, the program has been almost a year in the making. Additionally, the program will provide organisations with the tools and support they need to create and implement their own mental health and wellbeing policy.

The new initiative, which will be launched on Tuesday 13th June 2023, includes the opportunity for businesses to take advantage of nine topical workshops which individually will take a deep dive into important key aspects of what it means to be living well. These workshops will be facilitated by NAOS therapy service, who aim to provide an all round approach to wellbeing from a personal and professional perspective.

"Our mission at Bristol Nights has always been to support the night time economy and those who work in it," said Carly Heath, Night Time Economy Advisor, Bristol City Council. "We recognise that the past few years have been incredibly challenging for everyone, and we want to ensure that our community has the support they need to maintain their mental health and wellbeing.”

“Night workers regularly face more barriers to health and wellbeing than the daytime economy. Our night time workforce has poorer health indicators, higher rates of depression and anxiety, lower rates of pay and job insecurity. It doesn’t need to be like this. We believe that by supporting businesses to create effective mental health and wellbeing policies, we can help create a safer and more inclusive night time economy for all to enjoy. The tools and strategies that will be made available don’t just focus on fostering policies to create a mentally healthy workplace, but support businesses in building emotionally resilient and compassionate teams."
